Where hospital employees have tested positive for COVID-19: July & August

A sampling of U.S. hospitals and healthcare sites where employees have tested positive for COVID-19, as reported in July and August:

August

Oregon

An employee at McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center in Springfield tested positive for COVID-19 after traveling out of state, The Register-Guard reported Aug. 14. Spokesperson Jana Waterman told the newspaper the employee is quarantined at home.

Hawaii

The Queen’s Health System said nine employees at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu tested positive for COVID-19, Hawaii News Now reported Aug. 16. According to the news outlet, Maui Health said the workers are in self-quarantine.

Four healthcare workers and five patients at Maui Memorial Medical Center in Wailuku tested positive for COVID-19, Maui Health confirmed to KHON2 Aug. 14. According to the TV station, Maui Health said the workers are in quarantine at home, and the patients are isolated in the hospital.

West Virginia

More than 30 Logan Regional Medical Center employees tested positive for COVID-19, TV station WSAZ reported Aug. 8.  A hospital spokesperson told the station the cases are associated with a virus outbreak in the community.

California

Fresno-based Community Medical Centers’ dashboard listed 193 workers out Aug. 7 due to issues related to COVID-19. The dashboard of the four-hospital system shows 71 workers have tested positive for COVID-19 and 122 remain in self-isolation while awaiting test results.  

North Carolina

Haywood Regional Hospital in Clyde said fewer than 20 of its more than 800 employees have tested positive for COVID-19, TV station WLOS reported Aug. 7.

Ohio

Chillicothe, Ohio-based Adena Health System reported 25 confirmed positive COVID-19 cases among employees on Aug. 6, along with seven pending results. Adena said 14 of the employee positive cases were community-acquired; seven are attributed to patient contact; and four are from unknown sources.

California

At least 21 workers at Atascadero State Hospital tested positive for COVID-19, according to The Tribune. Internal case and testing figures obtained by the newspaper — which were current as of Aug. 4 — showed 17 workers have tested positive for COVID-19 since March 20. Four additional workers were added to the California Department of State Hospital’s total as of Aug. 5.

New York

Orleans Community Health in Medina, N.Y., said Aug. 5 that an employee tested positive for COVID-19 the week prior, according to The Daily News. The employee was sent home to isolate.

Alabama

As of Aug. 5, Huntsville Hospital had 156 employees out in Madison County due to issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, local TV station WAAY reports. Employees are sidelined because they have COVID-19, were exposed to it or are awaiting test results.

Massachusetts

Fifty-five patients and employees at Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Medical Center tested positive for COVID-19, MassLive.com reported Aug. 4.

Utah

At least 1,125 medical workers in Utah tested positive for COVID-19, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Aug. 2, citing data from local health departments. This includes physicians, nurses, janitors and office workers at hospitals, clinics and nursing homes.

July

Texas

Intensive care unit nurses at the Hospitals of Providence Memorial Campus in El Paso, Texas, tested positive for COVID-19, several Providence staff members told El Paso Matters, which reported the news July 31. Nurses told the news organization five to eight nurses recently tested positive, and there are additional suspected ICU nurse cases.

Alaska

Ten employees at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer have tested positive for COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, Homer News reported July 29. The total includes six employees who tested positive this summer and four more employees.

Arkansas

Employees at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould and NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro tested positive for COVID-19, TV station KAIT reported July 22.

Wyoming

Eleven employees at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County in Rock Springs were diagnosed with COVID-19 on July 16, according to Cowboy State Daily. The infected employees were in isolation at home as of July 20.

Hawaii

Judy Donovan, a spokesperson for Kona Community Hospital in Kealakekua, said employees tested positive for COVID-19 in mid-July, according to West Hawaii Today.

Florida

Fourteen junior residents, two senior residents, a fellow and an administrative employee at Gainesville-based University of Florida Health tested positive for COVID-19 in July after they attended a private party.
